Havering is up for consideration for the title of London Borough of Culture, and there’s no reason why it can’t win!
Residents have been extolling the virtues of Havering for some time – but the borough could soon attract attention from a lot further afield. Havering, along with the other London boroughs, is in the running for the title of London Borough of Culture. The competition was started by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, and the borough that wins will be able to access £1 million of arts funding. So does Havering have what it takes to grab the top prize? Well, it’s got a rich cultural heritage and a buzzing arts scene which we’re going to take a closer look at.
The new culture scheme
The London Borough of Culture scheme was launched by Sadiq Khan to promote the capital’s unique and diverse culture. He said that ‘“London Borough of Culture is a great way to do just that while showing the world that our cultural gems extend way beyond the centre of the capital to all corners of the city.”’ The top spot comes with £1 million of funding, but even if Havering doesn’t win it could still secure £600,000 if it impresses with some exemplary local projects. So where are the borough’s cultural hotspots?
Theatre in Havering
Havering has always had a really vibrant theatre scene, and boasts one of the best theatres in Greater London in the Queen’s Theatre. One of the most recognisable landmarks in Hornchurch, the Queen’s Theatre produces around eights shows a year, from musicals to acclaimed dramas. It also engages with over 11,000 participants a year via its learning programme, which enables people to express themselves and their stories through the arts.
Arts and education
The arts are an intrinsic part of Havering’s heritage. Fairkytes Arts Centre and Havering Music School are invaluable educational resources, and people of all ages benefit from them. The area has a number of great libraries too, where local residents can take part in all kinds of educational programmes. Romford Central Library is the borough’s largest, and has a large exhibition space and local studies centre that people can utilise. The Colour in Romford and The Retailery are two other exciting ventures bringing fresh culture to the area.
Finding a home
With a serious chance of being named as the culture capital of the capital, Havering is attracting lots of people wanting to set up home. The closing dates for boroughs to submit their bids is December 1st, which means that we can expect to see even more of a focus on culture in the coming months. We hope that you’re as excited as we are!
