Conveniently located between the Essex countryside and the nation’s capital, there is a great choice of family days out in and around Romford.
Romford has a long history as an important market town, and has a thriving local community. It is also one of the most popular places to live for commuters, thanks to the 20 minute train time into central London.
In recent years, estate agents in Collier Row have noticed an increasing trend in young and growing families moving into this thriving area. Here, therefore, we take a look at some of the best family attractions for a day out to remember.
Going to the dogs
If you’ve never been to the dog track before, you might think it is full of seedy men in long trench coats. You couldn’t be further from the truth. Romford Dog Stadium is hugely popular for a family evening out, and you will see everyone from age 2 to 102 enjoying themselves.
The venue is spotlessly clean and well maintained, with a focus on family fun. The kids will love placing small bets on their favourite runner, and there is a choice of restaurants offering reasonably priced meals. Give it a try, and you are certain to return time and again – best of all, the stadium is located just outside the town centre.
Brookside Theatre
This independently run theatre takes you back to a bygone era – yet it was only opened five years ago. The productions are top notch, and it is great to see how the local community has taken this traditional artform to heart, despite the many alternatives and distractions offered by the digital age.
The theatre is based within the Romford War Memorial buildings on Eastern Road, and all the money it raises is ploughed into the further renovation of this historic landmark. So as well as enjoying a fantastic family night out, you will be contributing towards a great community endeavour.
Bedfords Park and Visitor Centre
Set in 215 acres of beautiful parkland, Bedfords is a classic example of a treasure hiding in plain sight. The park lies to the edge of Havering-atte-Bower, just to the north of Romford.
The Visitor Centre offers kids the chance to learn all about nature, and the park itself is full of interesting fauna and flora, including three different varieties of wild deer.
Parking is off Broxhill Road, right opposite the water tower.
Rollerbowl at The City Pavilion
Rollerbowl brings traditional family fun with a 21st century twist. Based in the City Pavilion on Collier Row Road, the venue boasts 26 bowling lanes, Laserquest, pool, air hockey and lots more. There is also a variety of inexpensive, no nonsense food on offer to keep everyone’s energy levels up ready for the next event!
Moby Adventure Golf
Everyone from pre-schoolers to great grandparents loves a game of crazy golf, and Moby’s is as crazy as it gets. Situated on Whalebone Lane, you can’t miss it due to the huge fibreglass sperm whale watching the cars go by! The course features 18 holes, and if you get hooked, there are competitive membership options available.
